Peacock announced the premiere date for its upcoming series Bel-Air. The reimagining of the 90s beloved sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is set to air on February 13, with new episodes released weekly.
The reboot is based on Morgan Cooper’s record-breaking fan film that reimagines the classic 1990s sitcom. Set in the present, Bel-Air is a dramatic retelling of the classic that recounts “Will’s complicated journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air. With a reimagined vision, Bel-Air will dive deeper into the inherent conflicts, emotions, and biases that were impossible to fully explore in a 30-minute sitcom format while still delivering swagger and nods to the original show.”
NBC’s streaming platform has previously announced the nine series regulars who will join the remake, including Cassandra Freeman (aunt Viv), Adrian Holmes (uncle Phil), Olly Sholotan (Carlton), Coco Jones (Hilary), Jimmy Akingbola (Geoffrey), and Akira Akbar (Ashley).
Newcomer Jabari Banks landed the titular role. The Philadelphia native received a surprise call from Smith himself, who shared the exciting life-changing news.
Director and executive producer Morgan Cooper, who directed, co-wrote, and executive produced the series, said in a statement, “With this dramatic reimagining, we wanted to create a show that stands on its own while honoring the spirit and innovation of the original series.” He added, “Because Bel-Air is a drama, we’re able to really peel back the layers of these characters and themes in a way that you simply couldn’t do 30 years ago in the half-hour sitcom format. We’re able to go have tough conversations that challenge perspectives. At its core, Bel-Air is a celebration of the black experience through the perspective of a family.”
