Morgan Freeman is saddling up for a new Western. The Oscar winner will star opposite Michael Keaton in Rode to Ruin, an original thriller that reunites the two actors on screen for the first time in nearly four decades. Deadline broke the news Monday, September 1, and Keaton is stepping behind the camera to direct as well as star.
The pairing is a reunion 38 years in the making. Freeman and Keaton last shared the screen in the 1988 drama Clean and Sober, directed by Glenn Gordon Caron. For Freeman, Rode to Ruin also marks a return to the Western genre that gave him one of his signature roles in Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven.
What Rode to Ruin Is About
Written by R. Dean McCreary, the story follows retired U.S. Marshal Henry Tillman, played by Keaton, who spent roughly 40 years hunting the man who killed his wife. The cold trail finally heats up, leading him to an aging outlaw named Joseph Mulberry (played by Freeman), who is losing his memory. What they uncover is a buried truth neither man may survive.
Keaton has said the material pulled him in immediately.
"When I first read it, I thought, this is really good, and there's more here for Morgan and me to mine together," Keaton said. "Once we talked, it became clear we were on the same page. Just as The Shawshank Redemption isn't simply a prison movie, Rode to Ruin isn't simply a Western. It's a story with a lot of layers that happens to unfold in the West."
A Freeman Reunion Fans Have Waited For
Producer Lori McCreary framed the project as a character study first and a shootout second.
"Rode to Ruin is a deeply human story about forgiveness, revenge, redemption and the choices people make when time is running out," McCreary said. "The prospect of Michael directing and sharing the screen with Morgan is everything we hoped this film could become."
The film continues a busy stretch for Freeman, who currently co-stars in Taylor Sheridan's series Lioness alongside Zoe Saldana and Nicole Kidman. For Keaton, it is his third feature as director, following The Merry Gentleman and 2023's Knox Goes Away.
