Tramell Tillman is not spoiling anything. As Spider-Man: Brand New Day heads toward its July 31 release, the Severance breakout star is keeping his character close to the vest, and when the villain talk started, he flipped it with a question of his own: "Who says I'm playing a villain?"
That is the kind of answer that only makes fans dig harder. Reports have tied Tillman to William Metzger, an obscure corner of Marvel lore connected to anti-mutant forces and, in some tellings, the leadership of Damage Control in the MCU. Nothing about the role has been confirmed on the record, and Tillman seems happy to let the theories run while he says almost nothing.
The mystery comes with a bigger footprint. Tillman is reported to have signed a multi-picture deal that could carry into Marvel's coming X-Men films, which would make Brand New Day a doorway rather than a one-off. For an actor who broke through as the unforgettable Mr. Milchick on Severance, that is a serious runway inside the biggest franchise machine in Hollywood.
From Severance to the MCU
Tillman turned a supporting role into a scene-stealer on Severance, building a following on precision, menace and comic timing that felt entirely his own. Marvel casting him, then handing him a character it refuses to explain, suggests the studio wants to use exactly that unpredictability.
Whether Metzger turns out to be the answer or a decoy, the studio has managed to keep one of its more talked-about castings genuinely under wraps. Tillman is doing his part to keep it there.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens July 31, and for now, his role is one of its better-kept secrets.
