Tyler Perry's Doing Life is coming to Netflix, and the first trailer sets up a redemption story where second chances come at a real cost. The new film premieres globally in October, and it pairs Naomi Baker and Jay Reeves in a drama about two people trying to rebuild from very different kinds of wreckage.
Written, created, and directed by Perry, Doing Life leans into the gritty, emotional lane he has built a career on. This one trades the courtroom and the mansion for a prison, a riot, and the long road back that follows.
Naomi Baker, of All American: Homecoming, stars as Anika. Jay Reeves, who appeared in Perry's The Six Triple Eight, plays Carousel. The supporting cast includes Tamberla Perry as Cathy, Karen Obilom as Trina, Jasmine Sargent as Lisa, and Danielle Moné Truitt as Denise.
The trailer opens on a flashback. Anika is working as a prison officer when a violent riot breaks out, and Carousel, an inmate at the time, steps in and saves her life. That moment plants something neither can shake. When Carousel is finally released, the two reconnect, and an unlikely bond starts to build between the single mother and the reformed ex-convict, over the loud objections of Anika's family.
Carousel is the kind of character Perry loves to write. On paper, he might look beyond saving. Across the film, he is fighting to make amends, take responsibility for his past, and prove that a man can change. Anika, rebuilding her own life, has to decide whether she believes him.
Doing Life arrives on Netflix worldwide on October 2, 2026. It is Perry's latest project under his ongoing output deal with the streamer.
