‘Young Love’: HBO Orders a TV Series Based On Oscar Winning Animated Short ‘Hair Love’

The new show titled Young Love will follow the original characters Stephen, Angela, their daughter Zuri and cat Rocky as they juggle their careers, marriage, parenthood, social issues, and multi-generational dynamics all while striving to make a better life for themselves.

Matthew A. Cherry, the creator of Hair Love, will also serve as a showrunner with longtime animator Carl Jones (The Boondocks) on the 12-episode series.

“I am beyond excited to continue telling the story of Stephen, Angela and Zuri and further explore the family dynamics of a young Black millennial family we established in our short film Hair Love as an animated series,” Cherry shared in a statement. “Couldn’t ask for better partners in Sony Pictures Animation and HBO Max in helping us get Young Love out to the world.”

Monica A. Young, David Steward II and Carl Reed will executive produce the series.

The premiere date for the new series is still TBD. Stay tuned!
