1. LADY SINGS THE BLUES (1972)

In Lady Sings The Blues (1972) Diana Ross stars as the legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday. Beginning with Holiday’s traumatic youth, the film depicts her early attempts at a singing career and her eventual rise to stardom, as well as her difficult relationship with Louis McKay, her boyfriend and manager.

2. MAHOGANY (1975)

Struggling Chicago fashion design student Tracy goes from rags to riches when a chance meeting with a hotshot fashion photographer in the department store where she works leads to a runway life as a model in Rome. Tracy’s overnight success and strong ambitions bring her professional success as a designer, but her diva antics may destroy her relationship with social activist Brian, as well as her respect in the fashion world.

3. THE WIZ (1978)

When Harlem schoolteacher Dorothy tries to save her dog from a storm, she’s miraculously whisked away to an urban fantasy land called Oz. After accidentally killing the Wicked Witch of the East upon her arrival, Dorothy is told about the Wiz, a wizard who can help her get back to Manhattan. As Dorothy goes in search of the Wiz, she’s joined by the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion.

4. OUT OF DARKNESS (1994)

A former medical student Pauline Cooper becomes ill with paranoid schizophrenia and loses 18 years of her life due to the sickness. After her release from a mental ward, Pauline struggles to rebuild her life with help from doctors, nurses, and a new experimental medication that will help aid her back to health. Throughout the movie, Pauline seeks to better herself in a world that she felt had shunned her.

5. DOUBLE PLATINUM (1999)

A young singer (Brandy) is reunited with the mother who left her when she was a child to pursue her music career.
