The 56th NAACP Image Awards, held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, was a beautiful celebration of Black excellence. Broadcast live on BET and CBS, the event honored the outstanding achievements of people of color across many categories.

Six Triple Eight Dominates in Film Categories

The film categories were a highlight of the night, with Tyler Perry’s The Six Triple Eight dominating. Based on the true story of an all-Black, all-female battalion in WWII, thPerry’six war drama took home Outstanding Motion Picture. Kerry Washington, who starred in the film as Major Charity Adams, won Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture. Ebony Obsidian won Best Supporting Actress and Breakthrough Performance for portraying Lena Derriecott. The film beat out strong contenders like The Piano Lesson, Bob Marley: One Love, Wicked, and Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

Martin Lawrence snagged Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in Bad Boys: Ride or Die, though he was not present to accept the award.

Television Winners: Comedy and Drama Take Center Stage at The 56’h NAACP Image Awards

On the television front, comedy and drama series brought their A-game. Quinta Brunson won Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series for her beloved role in Abbott Elementary, though she also couldn’t attend the ceremony. The show had already secured Outstanding Comedy Series earlier in the week, cementing its status with 10 nominations. Damon Wayans won Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series for Poppa’s House, adding another victory to the night’s comedy roster.

In the drama categories, Queen Latifah took home Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for The Equalizer, while Michael Rainey Jr. won Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for Power Book II: Ghost. The seven-time nominee Cross claimed Outstanding Drama Series. Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist dominated the limited series categories with five wins across the week, including awards for Taraji P. Henson and Samuel L. Jackson.

The Ultimate Entertainer

Keke Palmer won the Entertainer of the Year award, beating out nominees like Cynthia Erivo, Kendrick Lamar, Kevin Hart, and Shannon Sharpe. The multihyphenate star, who also won for hosting Password earlier in the week, embodied the versatility and excellence the awards celebrate

Special Honors at the 56th NAACP Image Awards

Kamala Harris delivered a powerful speech upon receiving the Chairman’s Award, reflecting on her dedication to public service. Dave Chappelle, honored with the President’s Award, called it the most meaningful accolade of his career, urging the audience not to be discouraged in challenging times.

One of the night’s most nostalgic and joyous highlights was the induction of the Wayans Family into the NAACP Hall of Fame. Tnight’snic comedic dynasty—including  Keenen Ivory Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Damon Wayans Sr., Kim Wayans, Damon Wayans Jr., Damien Dante Wayans, and Chaunté Wayans. among others—has been a cornerstone of Black entertainment for over three decades. Their groundbreaking contributions to comedy, television, and film have redefined humor and opened doors for countless Black creators in Hollywood.

Singer and actress Cassie Ventura, known artistically as Cassie, announced her pregnancy on Wednesday. The announcement was shared via a touching social media post featuring a series of intimate photographs with husband Alex Fine and their two daughters, Frankie, 5, and Sunny, 3.

The  “Me & U” singer began dating Fine shortly after her split from Sean “Diddy” Combs. They made their relationship Instagram official in December 2018. The couple announced their first pregnancy, got engaged, married, and welcomed their oldest daughter the following year. Their second child, Sunny, was born in March of 2021.

The most recent pregnancy announcement comes more than a year after the 38-year-old filed and subsequently settled a lawsuit against her ex, Diddy, alleging various forms of abuse during their relationship. Fine has been incredibly supportive of his wife during this time.

The soon-to-be father-of-three also expressed his excitement in a post captioned “Best gift I could ask for.” In his Instagram stories, he revealed that Cassie is six months pregnant.

Preacher and producer DeVon Franklin is engaged to his girlfriend, celebrity trainer, Maria Castillo.

Franklin, who announced his split from Meagan Good in December 2021, proposed to Castillo on a Hawaii holiday vacation.

“Finding Maria has been one of God’s greatest blessings in my life, so I wanted the proposal to be as special as our love,” he told PEOPLE magazine. “We went to Maui for vacation, I told her we were gonna do a photo shoot and during the photo shoot I surprised her with the proposal! It was truly a magical moment and I can’t wait to spend a magical life with Maria!” 

The couple reportedly met a year ago when Castillo’s business partner, also Franklin’s friend, introduced them to one another. The two connected over their love for fitness and since that meeting, they’ve been inseparable.
